Children's Art Classes

Thursday 9 February, 3:45pm-4:45pm - ages 5 to 12 years (class fully booked)

Thursday 9 February, 5pm-6pm - ages 8 to 14 years (spaces available)

The aim for Term 1, 2012 is to help define and create a deeper understanding of the place of Modern Art at the turn of last century and its continuing influence on art today in a relaxed and fun environment. At the end of term students will recognize various Modernist movements and the artists involved - Romanticism, Art Nouveau, Impressionism, Pointillism, Futurism, Cubism, Fauvism, Expressionism.

Explorations/Discussions (themes will be simplified for the younger class):

  • What is the difference between Modern and modern art?
  • What happened to art at the turn of last century (1880s-1920s)?
  • What were the scientific and technological advances that influenced and enabled this evolution?
  • What is modern art for today? What's out there in art at the turn of this century?
  • Has the art of Modernity continued to influence us today?

Week 1 - Romanticism, Art Nouveau & Toulouse-Lautrec: Poster Art & Lettering 1

Week 2 - Romanticism, Art Nouveau & Toulouse-Lautrec: Poster Art & Lettering 2

Week 3 - Impressionism & Pointillism: Fruit Still Life (Pears, Apples, Oranges)

Week 4 - Cubism: Abstraction and the Real World

Week 5 - Clay: Self Portraits: Naturalistic/Impressionistic (Moulded); Constructivist/Cubist (3D slab form)

Week 6 - Futurism & Fauvism: Dynamism, Colour and Emotions

Week 7 - Futurism & Fauvism: The City

Week 8 - Van Gogh & Expressionism: Landscapes & Flowers (+ paint clay)

Week 9 - Modern Patterns/Motifs.

Tutor is Tina Watson, Bachelor of Design, UNSW. These are fee paying programs which run for 9 weeks.
